Firefighter and Carer
Hi I’m Catherine, I work as a care coordinator here at AStar Homecare.
I was attracted to working at AStar because knowing Gill and Adam, I knew that they are kind and genuine people who would go above and beyond to put the care into homecare. Having worked here only a relatively short time it’s clear to see why they are rated outstanding with the emphasis on team.
When I’m not in the office I work on call as a firefighter for Cheshire fire and Rescue service. Growing up I knew I wanted to help people and make a difference; I just didn’t know how I would go about doing that.
I’d considered applying for the fire service for a number of years, each time talking myself out of it. Thinking I couldn’t do what they do, and I certainly wouldn’t have the confidence to even approach it.
About a year ago, I saw a recruitment poster at the local shop showing a diverse range of people depicted in their daily life’s and as a firefighter. From there I started to think, why can’t I? What is stopping me other than myself?
So, with encouragement from my friends and family I sheepishly filled out an application form and thought well I’ll see what happens with no expectations.
The recruitment process was not without its challenges but the support and encouragement I received from my colleagues in the service enabled me to keep going, to improve myself and succeed.
Since joining my colleagues tell me I have transformed and grown in confidence and ability, I’m pushing my personal barriers and doing things I never dreamed I could.
I am so proud to wear a rainbow lanyard in both my jobs and have recently become a fire pride ally.
The pictures below show me in vastly different ways and I have the ability to surprise people equally about my different personas. I am proud to work in two roles that both support the community I’ve grown up in.
